Everyone wants straight teeth and a brilliant smile. Problem is, some people have teeth that are uneven or of variable colors. Others have gaps between teeth or teeth that are chipped or badly stained.
Correcting these flaws can be difficult, if not impossible without years of various procedures. Or, you can opt for a far simpler solution — porcelain veneers.
As their name implies, porcelain veneers are thin porcelain overlays that are bonded onto the fronts of your teeth effectively covering up any flaws and presenting a perfect smile to the world.
Before you can receive veneers, our team at Doctors of Dental Medicine examines your teeth to ensure they are healthy and aren’t in need of any treatments. Your teeth need to be in good condition and strong enough to support the veneers over time. If anything must be addressed, for instance if a cavity needs to be filled, it must be done before the veneer process begins.
Once deemed ready for veneers, the process begins by taking ½ millimeter of tooth enamel from the front of each tooth that will receive a veneer. Why is this necessary? Removing the enamel makes room for the veneers and also provides a better surface for the veneers to adhere to. After the enamel is removed, we then take impressions of your teeth. This mold will provide the blueprint from your custom-made veneers. We send the mold off to the lab for fabrication. Fabrication can take up to a week. To cover your exposed teeth while awaiting delivery of your veneers, we usually apply temporary veneers onto your teeth. While they will not be as nice as your actual veneers, they offer a good temporary covering.
When your veneers are ready, you return to our office. First we check the veneers to see that they fit properly and that the color matches your surrounding teeth. Once we are satisfied, we clean and polish your teeth. Then we cement the veneers onto your teeth, remove any stray cement and shave off any protruding areas. And then you’re ready to show the world your new, perfect smile.
