Partial Dentures Can Be a Total Solution

Today’s dentures are nothing like those made fun of in cartoons or what you read about with George Washington. Modern dentures are far more comfortable and, thanks to better diagnostic cameras like our 3D Radiographic Imaging camera, the fit and design is much more precise.

At the Doctors of Dental Medicine we provide both full and partial dentures. Full, or complete, dentures are required if you are missing the majority or all of your teeth on either your upper (maxillary) or lower (mandibular) jaws. Partial dentures are used when a patient has a series of missing teeth on either jaw. Dental implants are another option, but often when a patient is missing a number of teeth, they opt for partial dentures.

Partial dentures can be either fixed or removable. Sometimes it’s a matter of personal preference, but often it is the health of the surrounding teeth that really determines whether we opt for fixed or removable partials.

Fixed partial dentures

DenturesA fixed partial denture is also sometimes called a bridge, especially if fewer teeth are involved. A fixed partial denture attaches permanently in either of two ways: it can attach to a dental implant that is anchored into the jawbone, or it can attach to dental crowns placed on the teeth on each side of the missing teeth.

Removable partial dentures

A removable partial denture is also known as a removable bridge. The removable bridge, as the name implies, spans the gap created by the missing teeth. It consists of artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored base. Removable partial dentures are connected by a metal framework that anchors to each side of the bridge, keeping the denture in place.

Benefits of partial dentures

Whether fixed or removable, partial dentures from the Doctors of Dental Medicine have numerous benefits:

  • They maintain the shape of your face because when teeth are missing the jawbone under those missing teeth begins to deteriorate unless the gap is filled.
  • They make it easer to speak and chew.
  • They decrease the risk of periodontal disease
  • They prevent the adjacent teeth fro sliding over into the empty space.
  • They ease the stress on your jaw.

Don’t leave a gap with a series of missing teeth — fix that smile with partial dentures from the Doctors of Dental Medicine. Call us at 732-329-3113 for an appointment.
