You Don’t Need Special Glasses for our 3-D Productions

3-D Radiographic ImagingAt the Doctors of Dental Medicine practice, we take great pride in staying up to date on the latest technology in dental care. From new implant technologies to orthodontic trends like Invisalign to the current trends in cosmetic dentistry, we want to stay on the cutting edge of dentistry.

In line with that thinking, we utilize 3-D radiographic imaging in our offices.

Also known as 3-D cone beam technology, we are the first South Brunswick practice to offer this, and one of the few practices in all of New Jersey.

What is 3-D cone beam technology?

Similar to a cat scan (computed tomography), our cone-bean computed tomography (CBCT) system rotates completely around the patient, capturing data using a cone-shaped x-ray beam. These date are used to reconstruct a three-dimensional image of the patient’s teeth, along with the entire oral and maxillofacial (mouth, jaw, and neck) region. It also details the ears, nose, and throat.

Why is this valuable?

The 3-D images provided by our CBCT system are superior to the old 2-D x-rays in many diagnoses of certain conditions. It also helps in our treatment planning because we are working from a far more detailed image. How? Typical dental x-rays just focus on your teeth and each section covered by an x-ray requires a single image. Because our CBCT 3-D technology rotates completely around the head, it creates a single 3-D scan of the entire mouth, jaw, nose, and throat. This gives us more information, so that we can study your teeth and jaw from various angles and perspectives. The images are easily magnified, shared, and duplicated (if needed for second opinions).
